The ESRD Networks believe it is important for each dialysis facility to incorporate patient safety into its organizational culture. In 2008, the 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program was developed as an innovative training and recognition program to assist dialysis providers in increasing awareness and building a culture of safety among patients and staff. The 5-Diamond Patient Safety Program was created by the Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition (MARC, ESRD Network 5) and the ESRD Network of New England (ESRD Network 1) and is endorsed by the American Nephrology Nurses' Association (ANNA), the Renal Physicians Association (RPA), and the National Renal Administrators Association (NRAA).
